Ir de putas es bueno para la salud

Before we get into what it means to "ir de putas", let's talk about the word puta first. I think everything else will become obvious after that.

A puta is a vulgar way of refering to a sexservidora.  A sexservidora is a prostituta (prostitute). Other terms are ramera, prosti (short for prostituta), meretriz and probably a host of other words I don't even know yet.

Aside from a very vulgar and insulting way to refer to prostitutes, the word puta is used in a number of expression, insults and good old-fashioned bad language. But I'll get into that in another post.

So where do where putas work? Well, I think we all know you can find them in working in the streets. This is where the English term street walker comes from, and in Spanish it would be a paradita or puta callejera.  Prostitutes also work in whorehouses, or brothels.  In Mexico and perhaps other countries, a putero is a brothel.  More universal terms are casa de cita, burdel, prostíbulo, or a mancebía.

You can't talk about prostitution without talking about pimps. Let's start with the official terms for a pimp and pimping.  Proxeneta and proxenetismo,  as well as alcahuete and alcahuetear are the more formal terms.  But in Mexico you're very likely to hear the word padrote for pimp, and padrotear for pimping.  There's also chulo (de putas) that chulear or enchular.  I'm not entirely sure how universal these terms are, so they may not be recognized everywhere.

So, with all of that in mind, let's get back to our phrase.

Ir de putas es bueno para el salud
Going out to pick up hookers is good for your health

While you can use ir de putas in some contexts, you're most likely going to be using irse de putas.

Here are a couple more examples.

Me voy mañana de putas
I'm going to pick up hookers tomorrow

Anoche me fui de putas
Last night I went out to pick up hookers

Ir de putas no es poner los cuernos
Picking up prostitutes isn't cheating

Lastly I'm going to talk a little bit about culture.

In the US prostitution is illegal, but in many parts of Latin America and the world, it's perfectly legal.  Besides looking for callejeras, brothels, strip clubs and even some bars and nightclubs are places where someone can "Ir de putas".  The US outlawed the practice of prostitution a long time ago, but there was a time in our history where there were men who lived the "Sporting Life", which included visting brothels and picking up streetwalkers.

That's it for today, ¡hasta la próxima!
